Erbil, Kurdistan – Iraq (KRG.org) President Masoud Barzani has wrapped up the final leg of his official visit to Turkey in his capacity as President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The President was pleased by the warm reception he received from government officials, private sector representatives, and intellectuals on his trip. The President and his delegation met with President Gul, Prime Minister Erdogan, Foreign Minister Davutoglu, and Minister of Interior Atalay and also held meetings with members of the business community, journalists, and think-tank representatives. All officials appreciated the visit, expressing their optimism for deeper and broader relations in the years to come. The scope of relations between Turkey and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) continue to grow in political, economic, cultural, and social aspects. Trade has been an important lynchpin in the growing partnership, with an estimated annual volume of approximately 5 billion US dollars. Accompanying the President were Head of the Kurdistan Region Security and Protection Agency Masrour Barzani, the President’s Chief of Staff Fuad Hussein, Minister for the Interior Karim Sinjari, Ministerfor Natural Resources Ashti Hawrami, Minister for Trade and Industry Sinan Chalabi, Minister for Education Safeen Dizayee, and the Head of Foreign Relations Minister Falah Mustafa Bakir. A number of substantive issues relating to strengthening relations and economic ties were discussed in the various meetings and press conferences that took place in Ankara and in Istanbul over the four day period. Both sides also discussed the democratic opening in Turkey, a process which the President commended and strongly supports. The President commended the need for all sides to pursue peaceful and democratic means in this regard. The President shed light on the importance of good relations with Turkey and lauded the growing cultural and educational exchange that has helped shape understanding and mutual appreciation. The President is now in Germany and will soon be in France for official meetings.
